38. In Your Dreams – Hédi Jaouad

Dream transcription has always played a major role in Surrealist literature and art.

Dream transcription has always played a major role in Surrealist literature and art. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, bemoaned the underuse of the creative reservoir of dreams—he said it was “reduced to a mere parenthesis, as is the night.” Luis Buñuel, director of the still unforgettably shocking film, “The Andalusian Dog,” would have readily spent 22 hours of the day dreaming.

His acolyte Salvador Dalí never tired of boasting that all his art was merely an imitation of his own dreams whether they happened at night or in his wakeful hours. You’d be surprised to know that, according to Neuroscientists, we dream on average five hours a night.

Prompt:

Transcribe a recent dream, as it came to you—that is “raw,” without any processing, embellishing or rationalizing. You can use words, images or any other mode of expression. The point is to emulate the creative flow of the subconscious. In sum: Bring down the barrier between sleeping and waking. Unlock the untapped potential of your unconscious…and free-surf on the waves of your dreams!
